HOW DO WE PARTICIPATE?
Any high school in eastern Oklahoma may participate if they produce a musical from the official National High School Musical Theatre Awards list of Qualifying Shows and Roles AND if they complete the Intent to Participate form.
HOW ARE REPRESENTATIVES SELECTED?
At each high school production, adjudicators score using a rubric ballot. Principal Male and Principal Female Representatives performing in a qualifying role are selected by the highest scores tallied numerically in the following categories, each ranked as Proficient, Skilled, Advanced or Mastery:
Acting and Singing are weighed as double points – thus the possible scores are 2,4,6,8 -- scores are ranked 2 is proficient, 4 is skilled, 6 is advanced, 8 is the top score and considered mastery.
Dancing and Movement, and Stage Presence categories are scored as 1,2,3,4 with 1 as proficient and 4 as mastery
These weights are consistent with how the live ceremony will be scored
WHAT ELSE IS ADJUDICATED?
Chorus/Ensemble and Featured Dancer categories: Acting and Singing are weighed as double points, the remaining count as single (Dancing/Movement, Stage Presence) – same scale 1 - 4, 4 being the highest ranking
All other categories (lighting, costume, band, etc) and their subsequent items are scored as 1,2,3,4 with 1 as proficient and 4 as mastery
WHAT IS THE TALLY PROCESS?
Each Principal Role is tallied: ACTING + SINGING + DANCING AND MOVEMENT + STAGE PRESENCE. The Principal Male and Principal Female with the highest tallied score will secure the nomination.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS A TIE?
If more than one performer ties in their Principal Role category an official from The Discovery Awards will contact the school’s designated program contact and will rely them to settle the tie.
WHAT IF A REPRESENTITIVE DECLINES THE NOMINATION?
If the representative declines the nomination, choosing not to participate in the Discovery Awards ceremony, the performer with the second highest tallied score in the same Principal Role category will automatically receive the nomination. If this leads to a tie, the same process of tie-breaking will be used as detailed above.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
Adjudicators are encouraged to leave comments about the production or other noteworthy elements. These comments are in no way a factor in tallying the results and determining the nominees.
